Good Morning and Welcome to St. Mary’s Church!

10% is Enough! A campaign of Metro Industrial Areas Foundation, our community organizing effort allied with Manhattan Together, is beginning a campaign to bring back usury laws. These laws, restrictions on interest rates, were repealed in 1980, and this repeal contributed great deal to our current financial crisis. We have other limits for responsible behavior, such as speed limits on our highways. We hope to bring back these financial limits to stop the financial speeding and recklessness that characterizes our modern banking system. Join us Wednesday, July 22 at 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Chapel, Broadway and Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan. Our faith traditions, Christian, Jewish and Muslim forbid usury and it is high time to pay attention again to this ancient wisdom.

The Harlem African Burial Ground: This burial ground is the final resting place of 12 early African American members of St. Mary’s, buried there between 1832 and 1856. St. Mary’s members are working together with the Elemendorf Reformed Church to commemorate the burial ground in an appropriate manner and to keep the MTA and the NYC Department of Transportation from further desecrating this sacred site. The next meetings will take place on July 23 and July 30 ay 4:00 pm at Elemendorf Church, 171 E. 121st Street. St. Mary’s is represented by Ms. Christine Campbell. Please speak with her or Rev. Kooperkamp for more information.

St. Mary’s Summer Camp: Get St. Mary’s Summer Camp begun this past week. Please see Ms. Pearl Harris or call the Church office for more information (212) 864-4013.

Also: Today Sunday July 19, at 3:00 pm, Harlem Opera Theater will present a vocal recital by the recent winners of their annual vocal competition. All are invited. There will one more concert, this summer on August 2nd at 6:30 pm, a program of Handel, Mozart and Dvorak.

New Life in Harlem: We have started a new Church, Thanks be to God!!: This afternoon at 2:00 pm Ecclesia Ministries of New York will continue a new, outdoor church in Marcus Garvey Park, 2:00 pm every Sunday. St. Mary’s Church is taking responsibility for the first and third Sunday each month. We provide the lunch for the “Second Meal.” If you are interested in helping out, please call the church office. For more information about Ecclesia and the Marcus Garvey Park Church, please call Father David Madsen, (646) 753-1771.

Stewardship: Please keep your pledge up to date during the summer if you are planing to be out of town. Also, if you have not yet made a pledge to St. Mary’s Church, please prayerfully consider doing so. By our pledges and participation in our common worship together, we support each other and the entire ministry of our parish, serving Christ together as the body of the Faithful. Thank you for your past support of St. Mary’s Church and please keep your support constant in these difficult times.

Preaching next Sunday: July 24: The Rev. Earl Kooperkamp
