Reflections on today’s scripture readings: Prepared by Arthur Cash

First Reading: Genesis 22: 1 – 14

God asked Abraham to sacrifice to everything he valued, not only his child, but his immorality. Abraham had never heard of Heaven; immortality was attained through story or through progeny. If he did this cruel act, his story, his reputation, would be devastated. He could leave no progeny because Sarah was too old to conceive Obeying God would bring a total, heartbreaking loss. But he made what Soren Kierkegaard called “the absurd leap to God,” and acted against all reason because God asked it. Only that kind of acting, said Kierkegaard, exemplifies true faith. By way of contrast, a god of the ancient Greeks would have let the sacrifice proceed, and we would have a tragedy. But Abraham’s God rewards faith with kindness; he takes away the knife.
However, Abraham’s faith may have destroyed his family. Mother Jennifer Phillips pointed out to me that Abraham and Sarah never lived together after this day. He lived in Beersheba, she in Hebron.
